Well deserved victory

Southampton University achieved a well deserved victory over Ringwood last night. Board 4 finished quickly giving the University the lead. Ringwood equalised with a win on board 2, but my game on 3 was looking ropey thanks to by opponents good play and board 5 looked double edged and could go either way.

My opponent played the position really well to achieve an overwhelming advantge but time pressure, the  good friend of all chancers was looming. The game ended with my opponent sacrificing a knight with a guaranteed repetition draw. He then looked for more with the clock ticking. I sat thinking there was nothing to find, and we agreed a draw. However when I loaded the game up at home, the engine pointed out that I was still completely lost in the final position! My opponent deserved better for his play.

On board 5, Helen's aggressive play got its reward when Hugo blundered. That left Ringwood needing to win board 1 to draw the match. This was now an opposite coloured bishop ending with the Ringwood player a redundant pawn up so a draw was quickly agreed.

About the right result on the night.
