Match report Insurance

The Legal League kindly hosted this match at the new offices of SJ Berwin, as ICC [Insurance Chess Club] did not have a venue. Thanks to SJ Berwin for the usual level of hospitality, which was much appreciated! ICC provided 10 of the clocks. The match, now over 14 boards, was played in four separate rooms, so it was difficult to find out what was going on, particularly as I was playing! William Diffey dropped out at short notice, so I had to play myself. Legal had the edge in grading on the higher boards and ICC on the lower boards. I won the toss and chose white on odds. Ian Calvert had a quick draw, closely followed by Paul Barclay, and Michael Wiltshire had a quick win. Tony Paish then drew. Then I drew, Ray Hamilton lost and David Sedgwick won. Ian Reynolds had a good win against Clive Wismayer and Martin Page ground out a win, and David Malcolm drew. Anthony Kent had looked like winning, but could only draw, and James Aldred, getting short of time, thought it best to agree to a draw. At the end Julian Farrand lost on board 1 against Andrew Whiteley, and Ian Hunnable eventually beat Steven Walsh, though Steven put up valiant resistance. So, an 8½-5½ win, slightly more comfortable than is usually the case against the Legal League, with our only losses coming on the top and bottom boards! -- Geoff Naldrett https://bronowskitrophy.wordpress.com/records/competitions/2005-2006/
