Match report Banks

This match was closely contested by two evenly matched teams. Banks came out 7½-4½ winners in the end but the match could have gone either way. Unfortunately we lost two of our team on the day but the two substitutes scored 1½/2 and encouragingly we won on the bottom six boards. -- Ian Heppell

Match report Insurance

The Banks team were weakened by withdrawals of Costas Karayiannis (185) and Michael White (207) on the day, replaced by Ian Heppell and Charlie Cooke, which broadly evened up average gradings of the two teams. Last year we drew 6-6, but with 2 wins and 5 defeats, we could not come close to matching this. Our only two successes came on boards 4 and 7. Ian Hunnable won a French two Knights. Ian Calvert and his opponent both queened pawns, but the subsequent exchange of queens left Ian a won pawn ending. I managed to stall long enough in a lost ending with two rooks each, so that my opponent offered a draw before his flag fell. Martin Page was last to finish as White robustly countered his Falkbeer Counter Gambit. -- Anthony Kent
