Match report Insurance

Legal again raised a stronger team than Insurance based on gradings and it was therefore never going to be easy, particularly on the higher boards. Our two success came from David Sedgwick, playing the Alapin Sicilian into a won Bishops endgame, and William Diffey defeating a Trompovsky Attack with an unstoppable checkmate threat. Both Insurance players were outgraded by 20 points. Ray Hamilton and Geoff Naldrett faced experienced ungraded players on the bottom 2 boards and lost out to an Alekhine’s defence and a Classical Kings Gambit declined respectively. Towards the end of the match, Martin Page lost a same coloured Bishops endgame, and Ian Hunnable’s tactical flurry to queen a pawn was thwarted. Last to finish on board 1, Mark Rich’s Grand Prix Attack secured a draw in a N v B endgame. -- Anthony Kent
