Thank you to Southbourne for…
Thank you to Southbourne for a great night of chess.
We had a slight scare early on as we weren’t sure if Bruce was going to make it, Andy did some stretches on the sidelines ready to be called upon if needed. At 7:27 Bruce came through the doors, I don’t think James was as happy to see him as I was!
First to finish was Halsey against Russ with both players having 2 rooks on the 7th rank and a perpetual, despite Rob spending some of the game a pawn down.
I finished second, I think I played reasonably well but missed where the knight attacks ahead after dropping back, I think at that point any edge that I had had diminished. One thing I did achieve was forcing Martin’s time down to a couple minutes, and an oversight from Martin forced him to resign.
Other two games were looking healthy for us, Bruce was many pawns up and Dad seemed to have gotten through the worst against Anuhas and once some pieces were traded there was a great and slightly better position for white. This didn’t materialise however as Dad believed trading queens was the way though the endgame was alot worse than it first appeared as Anuhas’ pieces block off the kings route to activity.
Bruce seemed to have given back a couple pawns and headed for a rook and pawn endgame then a pawn up. Incredible effort from James to fight his way back to that position, though Bruce took the opportunity and converted the endgame.
Great games across the boards and thank you to Southbourne. It’s nice to get a first win in years against you all! Good luck for the rest of the season!
Great evening of chess
Well done to Highcliffe A for the win.
The match could have gone either way which made for an exciting evening of chess.
Russ played the opening well, had a good game, won a pawn but Rob fought back well to draw.
Think Adam and I missed lots of moves but it's all about not making the last blunder that counts. Unfortunately, that was me!
Anuhas v Richard looked level for most of the game so not sure what happened there but well played Anuhas.
James played well to come back from 3 pawns down to reach a rook ending only a pawn down where he had good drawing chances. I really don't how Bruce does it. He seems to sleep walk into his victories (literally!).
Good luck to Highcliffe A for their remaining games.
