A lucky escape

Honours were even at the end of the day but Ringqood and me personally can count ourselves fortunate.

Graham and Zander were first to finish when Graham ran out of time, in a position where he was 2 pawns down but considered that he had some practical chances.

Richard had played his usual attacking chess and Martin had defended well.  I saw precious little of this game so don't know what happened in the end except that Richard prevailed.

Mike D and I had yet another Benko.  As usual it got messy and we arrived at an endgame were Mike had a R+6 vs my BB+3.  Engines say it was equal but it seemed much easier to play for Black and sure enough I went wrong.  However, some of the obvious ways for Mike to make progress were problematic and in the end he offered a draw in a position where he could force a repetition.  I took the draw - just as well as the position was still lost.  A lucky escape for me and therefore the team.

Mike W and Kevin were last to finish. Kevin had dropped an exchange in the transition from the opening to the middlegame and seemed to have very little for it.  However, he did not panic and gradually built up a kingside attack, eventually winning the exchange back.  A draw was agreed in a QR+3 vs QR+3 position with both players short of time.

Always good to see Poole and especially good to see them nearer their old strength.
