A close match perhaps…
A close match perhaps decided early on when Ronnie's position collapsed. The other games were all very close. Frank played nicely with the backward d-pawn to stay as active as possible so that when the pawn dropped he had active play and deserved to draw. I had a small edge against Bruce throughout the game, but when I tried to create a better ending it resulted in the game fizzling out. I could have grabbed a pawn at the end, but black would have had full compensation. A draw was a fair result. Christian sacrificed a pawn, but didn't look like he had enough for it. Kevin hesitated getting the queenside pawns rolling and allowed Christian to re-organise his pieces. With both players short on time a draw was agreed. Well played Highcliffe who took their chances and defended well to come out deserved winners.
Agree with Allan's comments…
Agree with Allan's comments. A punished mistake in Ronnie's position and the whole game collapsed. The new Christian playing in a different style made for an exciting game keeping Kevin on the back foot for a while but it always looked like a draw was a good result. Bruce and Allans game looked to be relatively level throughout. I had huge pressure on Franz for a long time but with some resolute defending it was always hard to get much from the position. I eventually pounced on a mistake to have a passed pawn but then blundered it away, so a draw.
Thank you to Weymouth for the games!
