The cunning plan of the Dorchester captain was cruelly exposed by the strong and decisive play of the Weymouth team. In our defence (some of!) the games were more closely contested than the scorecard suggests. However Weymouth were worthy winners and we wish them well in the next round.

New player (Weymouth board 6) = A Rohn. International grade converted to ECF grade of 109 for the purpose of the handicap. Weymouth thus needed 4.5 out of 6 to win the tie.

Perhaps the result is a little flattering as there were a number of games that could have gone the other way. Frank was definitely worse, and his opponent should have taken the time to play Kh2 in preparation of winning on the queenside. As a consequence Frank found a convenient check that resulted in a piece being won. Ronnie always looked better in his game, whilst Chris Leeson was always positionally worse, It was interesting watching the gathered crowd pondering whether Dorchester were winning that game or not. Chris found the correct defence to hold the position (Kt vs K and advanced RP), but at what point did he know the position was drawn? Adrian won his first game for the club in a nice controlled fashion due to his better pawn structure. John Kelly won when his opponent played an illegal move (moving his queen when in check and there was no move that didn't lose the queen so he resigned immediately. I do think John was winning at that point anyway. Thanks to Dorchester for an entertaining evening.
