Well done to New Milton for coming away with a win against the odds. This was our first match under the constraints of masks but I think we all managed OK. The first match to finish was on board 4 where Bill always had an advantage and was able to press this home to put Wimborne 1 up. The top board was a close match and David was able to force a repetition after a good fight. Eddie seemed to have control on board 3 and seemed to miss an intermezzo by taking on b2 with check ( I may be wrong ! ). The match then turned and Peter played a very good game to win the game. My match was always tricky and I seemed to lose my way early on being a big passed pawn down. The game went to 75 moves and 3 hours but after making very difficult for Reenan he found the right moves to convert to cheers from his team ( mine had gone fearing the worst! )

Yes a great match all round

Yes a great match all round and very close overall with the small margins going our way. I thought I was better at one stage in my own game to then chose the wrong plan and my opponent got back into which meant I had to be very careful so opted for repetition and took the draw. Both Peter and Reenen were in games where they seemed to have a small advantage but still had to play well to win. Peter was first to finish and I think time pressure against his opponent gave Peter the opportunity he needed. Reenen was a pawn up with knight snd three pawns against knight and two pawns in the ending. He was offered a draw and looked to me as captain to see if it was okay to take draw snd I sort of shrugged my shoulders to say your choice. He decided to play on and at times his clock was down to 20 seconds which had me worried but in the end great play made his opponent have to sack the knight for two pawns and this meant he was able to gain the point. Thanks to Wimborne snd well as played New Milton. As a newly promoted team and heavily out graded by all opponents it is good to see we are currently holding our own and long may it continue.
