Match Report

Bill Murrey had this problem waking up each morning to Sonny and Cher, reliving the same day over and over until the right outcome was achieved. In his case he had to not be a miserable 'chap' (edited to replace a far more uncouth word starting with a 'b'); in our case we had to try and avoid a boring 2.5 - 1.5 win over our good friends from WimborneB It is quite clear that we would not have succeeded with poor old Bill's objective. Ah yes, the chess... B3: Dragi vs Nathaniel (W) started, and finished, like a ten minute rapid game. Move thirty was done while I was still thinking about move six. I hope I don't do Nathaliel a disservice, but Dragi was clearly not in his usual frame of mind and mate was quickly on the board. Even so, games must be won. Well done Nathaniel. B2: David (W) vs Mike started very slowly, certainly on my part. Unfortunately for Mike a 7.Qh5 move, winning a pawn, was very difficult to meet. I then spent a good deal of time looking for a killer blow. A series of five minute thinks followed by immediate forced responses by Mike saw myself with 12 mins vs 60 mins. In the end I was able to force all the pieces off leaving a reasonably trivial K+6p vs K+5p ending which Mike graciously conceded without going through the motions. Bad luck Mike. B1: Richie vs Peter (W) and Peter couldn't believe his luck to have avoided me for once (the feeling was mutual!). Richie's treatment of Peter's London System was more critical (ie sharp) than my previous efforts and Black's position was soon much better from both a material and positional perspective. I think it is fair to say that the game was only going in one direction and Peter conceded. Bad luck Peter. And so to B4: Simon (W) vs Graham, and with the first three games having finished reasonable quickly the fate of the match was left to these guys upstairs while we all enjoyed the bar facilities. The post mortem confirmed the game to be an interesting closed e4/e5 struggle with chances for both sides although with adequate defensive resources as well. Simon was able to keep everything solid and a draw was agreed when no further progress could be made. So what was the result? Take it away Cher and the bloke with the daft haircut ... They say we're young and we don't know Won't find out till we grow Well I don't know why that's true 'Cause you got me baby, I got you Babe, I got you babe, I got you, babe D PS. I hope the cultural reference was understood. If not then see me later for some homework.
