A good match and difficult

A good match and difficult for players to know how was going as Allan and Kevin were playing in Weymouth due to transport difficulties. I did not see much of matches as trying very hard to win rook and pawn end game. Mark went down to Peter and Bill seemed to be worse but held on for an excellent draw. I thought had winning chances but could not find the killer move. I found out Allan's result after midnight and watching replay of Cherries losing to the Hammers!

A very hard fought but, as ever, friendly match versus Wimborne. First to finish was board 2, where Peter grabbed some material at the risk of getting his queen trapped in the a8 corner, but managed to extricate it to emerge with a rook and 4 extra pawns vs a bishop and knight in the endgame, which was sufficient for the win. Board 4 was a very interesting game right from the opening through to the endgame. It seemed Bill had the better of the opening but Martin had the better of the middlegame to reach a better but very fiddly endgame. Martin was at one stage a piece for a strong passed pawn up. The post-mortem showed Martin was winning but short of time he returned the piece for the passed pawn and a draw was soon agreed. Ian and Graham had a long duel in a rook ending, where at one stage Ian had a pair of connected passers. Graham defended resourcefully and managed to reach the safety of rook vs rook and h-pawn to hold the draw. Finally, Kevin dropped a pawn in the opening and despite hanging of for over 3 hours finally got ground down by Allan to square the match.
