A close fought match between the 2 highest rated teams. Top board was first to finish in a draw with Allan pushing forward but finding no weakness in Mike's defence. Nick on 2 had a big attack on kingside and sacrificed exchange to keep the stranglehold on the position and with a few clever moves finished off to put Poole ahead. John on 4 looked comfortable but overstretched and managed to get his white king in an unusual position on h6 but Grzegorz could not find a winning line so ended in a draw. On 3 was a fairly open position and I missed a good move but probably still not winning and went into knight and pawn end game a pawn down but held on with Mike needing draw was finally agreed and adjourned to bar to discuss evenings events. Thanks to Poole for a tough but friendly battle. A long way to go in season yet!

Match Report (JohnW)

A high calibre encounter took place between Poole and Wimborne at the Centenary Club last night, where Nick’s very enterprising play on 2 proving the difference, with draws everywhere else. Statisticians appear to have lost track of the number of encounters between Mike and Allan on 1, with this one ending in a draw. I gave the home fans something to get nervous about on 4. It appeared I may have overstretched trying to squeeze the slightest of advantages. However, my silicon friend confirms we had been at 0.00 for a while when a draw was agreed. (Funny how it never felt like that). This draw enabled Mike to agree a draw with Ian in a N+4 and N+3 which appeared to be going nowhere but at least it meant they could catch last orders. As always, a pleasure to welcome Wimborne down the club and great to catch up with everyone. John W
