Clash of the Titans

After a 4NCL weekend that featured half the players in this match it might be expected that there would be some dull games. Weymouth struggled to get a good team out threw illness and a B team fixture on the same night, but fortunately I managed to get Andrej to come out of retirement and so we fielded a competitive team. Kevin seemed to be winning on top board, but Nick sacked a pawn for counter play and being short of time Kevin agreed a draw. Board 2 was a wild affair between Mike and me, with Mike hurling Harry down the board on move 3 and give me lots of problems to solve. I have a sneaky suspicion that Mike has been watching some Ginger GM podcasts. After 3 hours play we had only complete 17 moves and having just achieved my best position of the game Mike offered a draw which I accepted. Board 4 featured Frank against Dave and I think Dave may have missed some chances, but Frank gained a strong passed pawn which decided the game. There was nothing to separate Welsh International John Weatherlake and Slovakian Andrej Furjel in a tight game. John tried his best to create chances and save the match, but it wasn't to be. The league is now too close to call and may come down to the final game of the season.
