A highly-rated Poole side

A highly-rated Poole side were pushed to the limit by Bournemouth in a match that could have gone either way. On Board 1 Andrew’s dashing knight and pawn attack eventually gave up too much material in the face of calm and accurate counterplay from Simon. The draw on 2 came after Tarik overcame his sleep deprivation to launch a black pawn to d3, which briefly threatened to cause chaos, but Paul found a neat combination to neutralise the threat. On 3 Oleksii’s trademark Bird opening yielded a strong position, but Simon manoeuvred patiently and seized his chance to trap the white Queen. Which left the match hanging on the result of Board 4, where John had a promising 3 v 1 queenside pawn push but little time left on his clock. Tony defended superbly to equalise the position and went on to win on time. Thank you Bournemouth for hosting and for an excellent contest.
