Set against the backdrop of the England v Wales World Cup clash, this chess match, played in a friendly spirit, certainly competed with the excitement in Qatar and the room next door. The scoreline betrays the reality of the tension especially on the top two boards, where on board 2 after a seesawing game Sam prevailed. At this point mince pies were proffered by Sam to all players. The top board game continued for another hour and at the end both players were down to less than a minute each, with Oliver eventually losing on time. We look forward to the return match in March. A lively and friendly encounter. We had a great time, thanks guys! We're happy to pay a few elo points each in exchange for great homemade mince pies. 5/5, would go again.
