It was known that 3rd. team captain Les Hughes had been unwell, but it was understood that he would be fit for the match. However, he failed to turn up. No player could be found for board 4, as several players were unavailable. Simon secured the expected win against Paul Fearnhead, but rising star Ben lost to veteran Dave, who credited his win to his extensive knowledge of openings.
