Morecambe heavily outgraded Lytham 1 in this match and that was pretty much reflected in the result. The first game to finish was on board three - my own, with a very short draw. I had some excuse in offering a draw so early as I was recovering from illness but in truth the position was dead level in an exchange Slav and the rest of the match was already going Morecambe's way. Disaster struck for Lytham on board two, as Rob Gallagher walked in to a prepared line against Robin Moss, overlooked a tactic and found himself completely lost after only a few moves. He had to resign soon after. Carl Heald then won on board five after steadily increasing pressure with his large pawn centre, winning material and activating his rooks. On board one, Glenn House had a positional advantage throughout but John Cooper defended resiliently and it took until the last few minutes of play before the game, and with it the match, was decided in Morecambe's favour. Last to finish was board four, in which a sharp Schliemann Ruy Lopez was played. Morecambe's Dick Collins won a pawn early on but Black had compensation. Eventually, a Queen and pawn ending ensued with White still a pawn up. It was probably won for White but it was not easy in practice with both kings exposed and eventually the game was drawn.
