First, a welcome to the league for our hosts. None of us was sure whether the University had ever fielded a team in the past, although Plymouth club did use University premises 15 or so years ago. As to the match, the top 2 boards were fairly clear-cut. But on both the bottom boards, the Devonport boys emerged from the middlegame with an extra pawn, so cue inevitable boyish pressure from the youngsters while their older opponents clung on manfully. The match started late as the Uni were still learning to get to grips with their clocks, so it was 10 pm by the time Neel finally bowed to the inevitable on board 3.
