congrats to Highcliffe C for gaining a well deserved draw against a much higher rated team. New Milton were 2 up with two to play - Susan then capitalised on my blunder to make it 2-1. Thomas closed out a winning position very well despite spirited resistance from Martin.Battling start to the new season
Highcliffe made a spirited comeback against a strong New Milton side; Roger and I both went down to some precise middlegame play giving a 2-0 advantage early on to New Milton. Susan managed to take advantage of an advanced passed pawn to get a winning position vs Tim. Then we all gathered around for an 85 move marathon between Tom and Martin. Tom had material advantage but with both Queens on the board, his exposed King was chased around for over 40 moves until it found sanctuary in the farthest corner of the board. Tom played the end game brilliantly with only a minute on his clock to close out a win and get Highcliffe a draw which seemed most unlikely at the half way point. Great start to the new season, and thanks to New Milton for an exciting and friendly evening of chess.
