Match Report
Poole arrived in Weymouth on probably the coldest night of the winter so far and for what was destined to be a tight match......... until the last game finished. Making her first appearance for Weymouth on board 4 was (Junior) Karla Ventner (ECF No: 370846K) ( the latest product of the "Weymouth Chess Academy"). It was a case of youth V age on this board and the game was over before I'd even managed to take a couple of pictures for Martin's newsletter!! Mick lasted about a dozen moves and the game was over in less than 10 minutes!! This was quickly followed by a "grandmaster" draw on board one, where I think Allan and John just wanted to get to the pub for a pint! So by 8pm it was looking good for Weymouth.....................but then our captain Andre, who had seemed to be holding his own, but under a strong kingside attack from Damon, managed to leave a rook en prise and promptly resigned. So it was all down to Steve and Tarik on board 3, and with Steve having looked comfortable and a pawn to the good suddenly found himself under Tarik's cosh and had to defend resolutely with heavy pieces raining down on his king from all angles. Fortunately for Steve; Tarik was by now short on time and blundered his queen in a promising (but probably drawn) position and Steve brought home the bacon!! Well played both teams.....................particularly Karla!!
