Have in discussions with my…

Have in discussions with my team after the game, it was felt that it was played in quite an un sportsmanly fashion and that instead of  playing chess, thay were playing for draws.slamming down pieces, walk around, playing unesserly fast ,like a game of intimidation. This and I was only informed just before the game that it was an rule in the ECF that junior teams must play a 61 minute time control ;I rule that I as captain and as a player who has been playing around those who have been in the leagues for decades for many years. In the usual case this is agreed upon by captains and given that a lot of are players are elderly and need more time to think.this was felt unfair by are players and my self ,and given are experiences with similar unsportsmanlike conduct from Southport juniors last season, it was deamd that we as a club would never agree to these terms.Whiles I know that this is so Thay can be in bed for a responsible time, many hung around to a time where the original time control could have been in place. It is this and the fact that I personally have been playing regularly time control from the age of 15 and had no problems with school clashes. It is this and many other reasons that had my players playing on eage and with frustration that many reported clouded there judgement  and made them play in an unsound set of mind .There may not be anything that could be done with Mach score alteration but,it is my belief and the belief of many other s , that there should be some punishment for this team braking every rule of etiquettes associated with the game of chess

Merry Christmas to all young and old chess players!

Hi all,

Sorry to hear you guys were not happy with things last night!

The MCA rules on 61 minutes for junior events are the well known and agreed rules for obvious reasons and are communicated and documented  clearly. An email was sent to your team captain the day before the match to remind you and team that this would be the case to avoid any surprises.

Neither I or  team captain Adam (Adult in corner) were aware of any issues during the game and were not approached by anyone from Aigburth to inform us of  any problem so we had no opportunity to address anything which obviously we would have acted on if any clear issue was highlighted? Junior captain Adam did notice some raised voices amongst the Aigburth players after the game (9.15) so approached them to assist and was informed of some of the points raised above but nothing can be done after the match.

The juniors have always acted respectfully to opponents from our observations but yes they do play quickly and stand up from the board and walk around more often than adults but many adult players also do this. If any team ever has an issue with behaviours or attitudes Adam, Rob and I are always there to help but as stated we have never witnessed any problems.

There was actually a really nice Christmas spirit and vibe in both rooms at the club last night and we hope you and all others present enjoyed the free food and free drink provided by Liverpool chess club to get you all in the Christmas spirit.

Merry Christmas all!

Hi Jim, Seeing as how James …

Hi Jim,

Seeing as how James (acting captain) does not have an adult in his corner, I'll throw my two pence to try and assist.

I believe that the junior events rules you invoke may be applicable to "rapid" junior competitions and as far as I can tell the 4th Division is neither a junior nor a rapid competition. Even though yourselves and Southport have registered teams of juniors (which is to appreciated and encouraged) and we should aim to accommodate players at that age, I don't believe that a clear set of rules was issued out by the MCA to the team captains in regards to how games against junior teams should be handled. I also believe that this was left to team captains discretion, in which case a one day notice isn't exactly sufficient to make sure we can accommodate.

Perhaps we can clarify with the MCA a clear set of rules and communicate them out to all teams in that Division to avoid such episodes in the future.

Having worked with children/juniors myself, I can appreciate how there would be friction with a generation clash, however I am confident that neither the juniors at your club nor Aigburth players acted out with ill intent.

Andrei Tamboi,

Aigburth 3 Captain
