From the Insurance Chess Club archive (Kevin Parrott)
This match doubled as both a Combined League and Insurance Cup (Bowring King) match and, as a result, had big implications on all fronts.
In the Combined League, PIFC/Wiltshire moved to the top of the table -level on match points with Bank of England (ahead on game points but having played a match more).
In the Insurance Chess Club Shield, the win places PIFC/Wiltshire in pole position and, barring a mathematical freak, eliminates the Ombudsmen from the running. The final round of matches in April features ABI/Zurich versus PIFC/Wiltshire. This promises to be the decider. The picture will be clear by then -but, because of the size of their victories, a drawn match will probably be enough for PIFC/Wiltshire to secure the title.
Finally, PIFC/Wiltshire move forward in the Bowring King to play Slaughter and May. The Ombudsmen's "reward" for this loss is a place in the Durham final in March, courtesy of the withdrawal of Marsh.
