About us
Founded in 2024 North Walsham Chess Club aims to provide opportunities for improvement and competitive play for serious minded players, while also providing a club for more casual and less experienced players. Abilities range from complete beginner to several players around 1500 Elo. Ages 13 and up.
Venue
Our venue is the North Walsham Phoenix Group Building. This is located in the former Barclays' Bank building in the Market Place, which if you're facing uphill in the Market Place is on your right. You can identify it by looking for the signs above it which read 'Community Pantry' and 'Community Coffee Shop' alongside a stylised red and blue image of a phoenix.
Parking
The venue unfortunately does not have its own parking. Spaces in the Market Place itself are disabled only, and an area for loading. The nearest streets are unsuitable for parking on. The nearest parking is in Bank Loke, where there is a North Norfolk County Council pay and display car park. This car park should be approached from Grammar School Road, which is between the railway station and LIDL. This car park has a postcode of NR28 8JN (according to north-norfolk.gov.uk). The Bank Loke car park requires payment before 6pm, so visitors using this car park are advised to purchase a ticket sufficient to take them to 6pm. At the end of Bank Loke a pedestrian archway leads through to the Market Place, and the Phoenix Group Building is immediately on your left. There are of course other places to park in North Walsham. Midland Road car park is free; it is just off the bypass (a nearby postcode is NR28 9JR). Because it is free, it can fill up early in the day. It is just a seven minute walk (via Bank Loke) to the Phoenix Group Building. To find Midland Road, once on the bypass (the A149), head in the direction of Great Yarmouth; after the large lights-controlled junction near the station, take the first left (it's only about a hundred metres past the lights), then left again.
