Preston 'New Player' was L Junho On board one, the game was very evenly balanced with, if anything, a slight advantage to Jonathon due to his better king position for the endgame. However a neat passage of play from William led to him winning two pawns and eventually the game. Board two was a Caro-Kan defence in which white soon established an attacking position which was difficult to defend. A discovered attack on Black's Queen and simultaneously his rook led to the loss of the rook, and although White's King looked a little exposed Black was unable to profit from this and soon resigned. Board three was a Winawer variation of the French defence. The game was equally fought until the endgame in which Black had the nominal advantage of bishop v knight. However, the position of White's knight allied to a good king position ensured the draw. Bord 4 was another Caro-Kan. White won the exchange but subsequently allowed Black's Queen to infiltrate his position. This, followed by support from Black's minor pieces forced White to resign.
