Preston 2 players arrived for the match mistakenly believing they were the ‘home’ team. Discombobulated and with their home preparation out of the window would this give Preston 1 an advantage ? Hmm …. maybe not. First to finish was board 1. Neither player gaining an advantage out of the opening. On board 3 Phil tried an unfamiliar opening but again could not gain an advantage at this stage. On board 4 material was equal but Alan had posted a rook on an open file and looked to have slightly the better of the opening. Next to finish was board two. Malcolm had pressure against one of Jim’s backward pawns and he believed that an exchange of pieces might increase the pressure. Sadly for Malcolm this did not result in the advantage he had hoped for and a draw was agreed. In my game queens and a rook each were exchanged which produced an equal position. I then posted a bishop on the A file hoping to contain Phil and swap this off. Phil trapped this bishop and I was in danger of losing it, and at this stage I was staring defeat in the face. I then started to think positive. I was positive I was going to lose. Phil won the bishop and being a piece up forced resignation. Alan’s game eventually petered out into a draw maintaining his unbeaten run. Well done to Preston 2 on a fine win.
