Sorry about the distractions of rain water dripping into a bucket, and some people being interviewed for TV in the middle of the room. I didn't see anything of Sebastian's game which finished first, because I was busy sacrificing a knight followed by an exchange, and managed to win somehow. Brett converted an ending a pawn up against John Cooper. Geoff held the draw to win the match. We were simply happy to have…
We were simply happy to have made it through the torrential rain into the venue and to receive the usual warm welcome from our friends at Preston. All of the games seem to have been interesting, with Phil's relatively early win, combined with tense and/or imbalanced positions on the other boards, giving Lytham hopes of an upset. But then Malcolm made light of his time shortage to land a swashbuckling mating attack to square things off, then Brett ground out the win in a 2 rooks and pawns endgame to edge Preston ahead. Andrii pressed on (geddit?!) and on to try to get a winning advantage in a tricky endgame with knights, rooks and pawns, but Geoff held firm to secure the draw and the match. Well done to all!
