Boad two for Poulton was Mr Wilkes Board four for Poulton was Peter Wallace A very tight affair which ended in a drawn match when Simon Rogers eventually found a way through against Harri Patsos in a a very hard fought game on board one. The game looked likely to end in a draw as both players were stiffed by their own pieces and those of their opponents, which meant very limited chances of a breakthrough. You could say Harri blinked first and tried to improve his position, which resulted ultimately in his defeat. To be fair Simon took his chance very well and finished in style. On board two Seb looked like he was doing okay and he had a more attacking position, however he was unable to maintain this and lost in the endgame against Mr Wilkes. Danny Aspden got a middlegame advantage against Ken Gorman on board three, this turned into a material gain and although Ken battled on, Danny just had to ensure he did not fall for any traps before threatening to promote a pawn and thereby win more material as Ken had to sacrifice a bishop to stop it. Danny played very steadily to close out the win. Board four produced a good game in which Peter Wallace appeared to have a slight advantage, however the position was never easy for either side and Andrew Thornley played some accurate chess to get parity and then as the game went into an endgame Peter missed the chance to save himself with a check on whites king at a crucial moment. The meant Andrew could trade off rooks and win a pawn with an overwhelming positional advantage and Peter resigned.
