The score line is probably closer than it should be. Board 3 was an early draw followed quite closely by board 1. I didn't see much of board 3 and I thought II had managed to just about equalise with white when a draw was offered! The other three games were much feistier offerings. Next to finish was board 4, where it had looked as if Rob has survived the worse of it when his opponent produced a nice discovered check threat that won material and the game. Board five was next to finish when Julian, having been under the cosh for the part of the game I saw came out of a tactical skirmish a piece up after his opponent mis-calculated. This briefly made the match level, but Gareth on board 2 for Southampton had played the early part of his game impressively and continuing to do so to produce a well deserved victory for Southampton.
